Saving money

Running from February 26th to March 3rd, America Saves Week is an opportunity for people to assess their saving habits and organizations to offer assistance and programs to promote good savings behavior. The Family Credit Union encourages all Americans to save using safe and trustworthy organizations and programs. We are committed to giving you the tools to save your money, reduce the debt you have, and, in turn, build your wealth.

Daily Savings Themes

During American Saves Week, each day we have a different idea to help you work on your savings.

Day One: Save With A Plan

If you have a savings plan in place, you are more than twice as likely to save for things like retirement needs and education costs. You can take the America Saves Pledge and enter to win a chance to win up to $750.

Day Two: Save Easily, Save Automatically

It’s hard to take money from your wallet or paycheck and put it into savings, however, if you have it automatically deposited into a savings account, it’s painless! The Family Credit Union can help you set up automatic deposits quickly and easily.

Day Three: Set Up A Rainy Day Fund

You probably have heard the phrase “saving for a rainy day”, but never really thought much about it. A Rainy Day Fund is usually a small amount of money separate from your main account. This account should be a little more difficult to access, so you aren’t tempted to use it to buy pizza or a new TV! Set up an account and start making small, consistent contributions to it. It will grow over time if you don’t touch it.

Day Four: Save For Retirement

Retirement may seem like a long way off or just around the corner, but regardless of the time, it’s never too late to start saving. Check with your employer to see if they offer a 401k program or contact a financial institution, like The Family Credit Union, to set up an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). If you already have a retirement account, consider increasing your contributions by at least 1 percent. Every little bit helps!

Day Five: Save The Extra Bits

It’s easy to save big amounts like tax refunds or the proceeds from selling a car, but you can save the small extras, also. If you get a bonus, birthday money, or a raise, put the money in your savings. You’ll be surprised how it will begin to grow with just a little bit saved at a time.

Day Six: Save Together

Most adults wish they had started saving when they were younger, so get your children started on the right path. Think how much money you’d have if you had saved a couple hundred dollars a year since the time you had your first job! Show your children how to build a budget, use savings and checking accounts, plan for retirement, and more.
